James Bond Island

The island of Phuket is the largest province of Thailand, and lies off the west coast of Thailand surrounded by the Andaman Sea.

Formerly it derived it's wealth from tin and rubber, and historically was part of one of the major trading routes between India and China. These days the main industry is tourism, and no wonder!

Phuket is blessed with a warm climate- temperatures stay between 22- 33 C all year round- and the combination of the lush tropical vegetation, powdery white beaches, magnificent coves and beaches (on the west coast), snorkelling and diving in crystal clear waters, distinctive Thai cuisine, and the warm and welcoming nature of the Thai people make Phuket a popular holiday destination.

It is therefore no surprise that Fortune Magazine rated Phuket as a top 5 retirement destination in the world...

In 2004 Phuket suffered enormous damage at the hands of the Boxing Day tsunami, but a decade later all renovation is complete, and Phuket is currently undergoing intense development with a significant number of new hotels, houses, and apartments under construction.

Phuket as a Golf Destination

Blue Canyon Country Club- The Canyon Course

The Canyon Course at Blue Canyon Country Club has flown the banner for Phuket golf for over 20 years, and has won many accolades including Best Course in Asia, and world top 100 a number of times in the early 2000's.

These days the new kid on the block is Red Mountain- which I rate as even better. Red Mountain is a quality design in dramatic terrain, and a Travelling Golfer 'must play'.

Red Mountain GC- hole 18

Laguna Phuket has recently been renovated by Paul Janssen from Nick Faldo Design, and he has done a good job, taking a relatively flat course, and adding interest by jazzing up the greens and bunkering. It now looks and feels like a modern course, and is a quality addition to the golfing itinerary.

Mission Hills is a Nicklaus design, and The Lakes Course at Blue Canyon, and Loch Palm at Red Mountain are good courses as well.

Together they make a top golfing destination!

Pool Villas in Phuket are gorgeous!

Phuket is a very popular holiday destination and caters for everyone from backpackers to high end travellers.

At The Travelling Golfer we can recommend appropriate accommodation- from quality mid range accommodation near the courses or near Patong- through to the high end spa resorts. And believe me the high end in Phuket is very very good!

It paints a nice picture doesn't it? - nice warm weather, a private pool villa, fine dining, perhaps a trip out to the Islands, and some world class golf...
